Why so many book clubs still live on Discord
Because the readers were already there. BookTok and romantasy fandoms run on Discord the way earlier fandoms ran on LiveJournal. Channels can be spoiler-gated. Voice exists if someone wants a call. Bots can post a daily discussion prompt. None of that requires anyone to build a product.
The cost is organisational. Invites expire. Ownership sits with whoever pays Nitro or remembers the login. When the admin disappears, the club disappears. Pages someone read last Tuesday exist only as a message, if that.
How to find a Discord book club
Search for the series or genre plus “Discord” on the platform where that fandom talks — TikTok comments, Reddit, author newsletters. Disboard and similar directories list servers, but quality varies and invite links rot. Prefer a server that states a current read in the welcome channel. If the welcome channel is only rules and roles, keep looking.
Do not trust a URL from an old blog post. Ask in a related subreddit whether the server is still alive. A dead Discord with a pretty name is the most common way this search wastes an evening.
Using Discord alongside a real club
Plenty of groups keep voice and memes on Discord and keep the book, the roster and the page challenge in a club app. House of a Reader does not integrate with Discord and does not pretend to. If your people will only talk on Discord, found a private circle here for the shared read and the weekly target, and leave the chat where it already lives — or move the chat into the circle and stop paying the split-attention tax.
