# Buddy Reading Apps

A buddy reading app is a place two or more people can share one book, see each other's progress, and talk without spoiling the person who is twenty pages behind. House of a Reader does this as a private circle of any size, including two. StoryGraph has buddy reads. Fable clubs work at that scale. Shared Goodreads updates and a group chat are the homemade version, and they work until someone forgets to update. Pick the tool that makes progress visible without a status-check text.

## What a buddy read actually needs

A shared title, a way to see who is on which page, a chat that can be spoiler-gated by how far you have got, and a door that is shut to everyone else. Optional: a deadline, a weekly target, a rating when you finish. Video is optional and usually unused.

Two people texting “what chapter are you on” is a buddy read with extra friction. The app's job is to stop that text.

## Apps that work for two (or five)

Buddy reads fail from mismatch more than from software — one person finishes in a weekend, the other is on page forty a month later. The software can still make the mismatch visible instead of silent.

- **A chat thread and honesty**
  iMessage, WhatsApp, Instagram. Free and already installed. Progress is a rumour. Fine for one book; exhausting as a habit.

**What is the best app for buddy reading?**

House of a Reader if you want a private room, a shared book and pages that count, including for two people. StoryGraph if you both already catalogue there and want a buddy-read object on top. A plain chat app if you will only do this once.

**How many people is a buddy read?**

Two is the name. Three to five is still a buddy read in practice. Past that you have a book club and should treat it as one — a creed, a voting rule, a place that is not someone's DMs.

**How do we avoid spoilers in a buddy read?**

Talk in a room that both of you are in, and mark chapter numbers. Do not screenshot. In the House, the chat belongs to the circle, so you are not mixing spoilers with a group chat about dinner. Stay behind the slower reader on purpose, or agree that the faster one waits.
