# How Book Clubs Choose Their Next Book

Book clubs choose the next book by rotation, by founder fiat, by a vote, or by a theme that lasts a season. The method matters less than naming it before the current book ends. ## Four methods that work

Pick one for the next six months. Changing method every cycle is how people stop offering titles.

- **Rotation**
  Each member picks in turn, no veto except content-warning veto. Fair, slow to go stale, occasionally painful. Best for private circles of friends who will endure each other's taste.

  Fast, coherent, easy to theme (a season of fae, a month of completed series). Best when the club formed around someone's taste. Resentment if the host never yields.

  Shortlist of three to five, then a ballot. Approval voting or ranked choice beats first-past-the-post for small groups. The House does not run the ballot; use a poll and then set the shared read.
- **A seasonal theme**

## What makes a pick survivable

Availability: can everyone get it this week, including library and ebook. Length: match the last book that actually got finished, not the last book that got praised. Series status: do not start an unfinished five-book epic unless the creed is “we wait”. Spice and darkness: state the numbers. Cliffhangers: warn.

A shortlist should include at least one completed or standalone option. Romantasy clubs that only pick ongoing BookTok series will spend half their life in the gap between volumes.

## How it works in a House circle

The founder sets the current book. That is the software. The politics are yours: discuss in the circle chat, vote in a poll, rotate a spreadsheet. When you have a winner, change the shared read so the door matches reality. Pages logged against other titles still count for the reader; the club challenge cares about pages, and the identity of the club cares about the shared read being true.
